PEER SUPPORT COMMITTEE

Student support office hours/one-on-one meetings with current and prospective students to offer advice/learning tips, resources, testimonies, offer workshops on college survival/flagship survival.

Man Ian Woo
胡文欣

Man Ian Woo is a third-year biochemistry and Chinese flagship student at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UHM). She is the student office assistant at the Chinese Language Flagship Center and a member of the peer support committee. She plans to go on capstone In Taiwan in Fall 2021. Outside of school, she enjoys playing tennis and baking.

Kai Nishikawa
西川凯

Kai Nishikawa is an undergraduate student currently in his first year at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM). He is also in the Chinese Flagship Program. He enjoys playing Animal Crossing, watching YouTube, and listening to music in his spare time. He hopes to use Chinese in his future career in translation and interpretation.

Paul Porter
保罗

Paul is an undergraduate senior double majoring in psychology and Chinese flagship at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. He is also the student tech assistant at the Chinese Language Flagship Center. Paul is interested in Chinese literature, especially the science fiction novel Three-Body written by Liu Cixin.

Anna Backus
罗长春

Anna Backus is currently pursuing a Chinese Flagship major with a Sociology minor. She has been fortunate enough to be a previous Flagship Hackathon participant in 2020, Co-Chair of the Flagship Tech Center Culture SIG, CALICO Conference presenter, and is currently serving as UH Manoa’s Chinese Flagship peer support Committee Chair. Throughout her Flagship journey, she has realized how immensely important Chinese is in the world and hopes to someday work for the government, where she can utilize her language skills.

RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE

Participate in recruitment activities e.g. attend major events, give presentations to Chinese courses about Flagship, outreach to high schools, design and create promotional materials e.g. flyers, presentations, consolidate language, etc.

Molly Wolyn
孟秋菊

Molly Wolyn is an undergraduate student at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM) and is part of the Chinese Flagship Program on campus. She is currently a 2nd year student, dual majoring in Chinese and Food Science. During her time at UHM she hopes that she can learn more about the Chinese language and culture.

Noelani Lommasson
杨天宇

Noelani Lommasson is originally from rainy Oregon and now studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She majors in Chinese with a Flagship Specialization and Social Work. For about a year and a half she has been a Student Ambassador for the Chinese Language Flagship Center at UH Manoa and continues to help at the Center. Her career and professional goals are to be proficient in Mandarin and earn her Masters in Social Work to help orphans and those in foster care. When she is not studying she enjoys hiking in the mountains, going to beaches, or hanging with friends.

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE

Create and publish newsletters (frequency TBD), assist with managing social media and website, assist with building and maintaining alumni relations. Publication content ideas: student recognition, testimonies, suggestions/feedback, survey responses, brief news of student reports/reflections, suggestions, feedback, tips/advice, sharing different plans, etc

Cara Tan
陈佳忻

Cara Tan is working on her undergraduate degrees in both Economics and Chinese with Flagship specialization at the University of Hawai’i, Mānoa. She hopes to use Chinese to aid her in pursuing a career in healthcare and healthcare economics. Outside of class, Cara enjoys participating in the university’s symphony and tutoring students.

Sydney Hirayama
平山新妮

Sydney Hirayama is a double major in Chinese Flagship and Biology. She will be going on her capstone year in Spring 2023, hopefully in Taiwan and an internship related to medicine. She is currently on the premed tracks and aspires to be a dermatologist in the future, while also continuing to immerse herself in the Chinese culture.
